Yarra Boulevard (Kew Section)
OVERVIEW
The Kew Section of the Yarra Scenic Boulevard extends from Walmer St to the Chandler Highway and was constructed between 1933 and 1936.
The original plan was for the Boulevard to link Richmond with Kew and the section to Bridge Rd was completed first.
It had been proposed that the Boulevard would then continue from the Chandler Highway to Warrandyte, but this was never completed in its entirety due to lack of funds.
The Kew Section of the Boulevard ends at the Chandler Highway, and restarts in Alphington, at
Lower Heidelberg Rd, adjacent to Sparks Reserve, continuing through Eaglemont to its terminus at Burke Rd, Ivanhoe.
A study of the Kew section will reveal that Studley Park Rd crosses the Boulevard at an overpass near the entrance to the Studley Park Boathouse. This is an extension of the Boulevard , which leads to the Boulevard Loop Rd. A short one-way link to Studley Park Rd just up from the Johnston St
Bridge allows traffic from the city to enter the Boulevard Loop.
The Loop is now closed to private vehicles by a gate near the Studley Park Rd link. It is heavily used by lycra-clad cyclists!
